Behind every warm home and freshly rendered facade, there's usually a local specialist quietly doing work that never makes the headlines but makes a real difference to the communities around them.

A Sector Under Pressure to Perform

The UK has a serious problem with its housing stock. According to the House of Commons Library, only around half of homes in England currently meet an EPC Band C rating and the government wants all fuel-poor homes to reach that level by 2030. That's a huge amount of work to be done, and much of it starts with the building envelope: the external walls, roof and windows through which so much heat is lost.

It's not glamorous work, but getting it right makes an enormous difference to the families living inside those buildings and to our collective carbon footprint.

A Family Business with European Roots

One company playing a significant role in this effort is Licata Building Systems. Founded in Sicily in the early 1980s, Licata has grown into a trusted UK supplier of External Wall Insulation (EWI) systems, silicone and acrylic renders, brick slips, cladding, and waterproofing solutions, with depots across London, Birmingham, Manchester and Essex.

What makes them stand out is the rigour behind the products. Everything in their range is developed in dedicated R&D laboratories and certified to standards including BBA, ETA and ISO9001. Their EWI systems come with warranties of up to 25 years on approved installations, a genuine statement of confidence that gives specifiers, contractors and homeowners real peace of mind.

They work across retrofit, new-build and modular construction projects, which means they're as comfortable helping a homeowner insulate a Victorian terrace as they are supporting a local authority running a large-scale housing regeneration scheme.

Not the Only Ones Making a Difference

Licata aren't alone in this. Across the country, other regional specialists are doing similar work. In Greater Manchester, Wetherby Wall Systems has spent over 25 years focused exclusively on EWI, including major social housing projects that have seen thousands of homes benefit from improved insulation and weatherproofing. These are businesses defined by deep technical knowledge and long-standing local relationships, qualities that matter enormously when project performance has to be guaranteed over decades.

Worth Celebrating

It's easy to overlook the specialist suppliers behind the UK's built environment. They don't advertise heavily. They don't court press coverage. But the work they do, protecting buildings, reducing energy bills, improving lives, is exactly the kind of contribution that deserves recognition.

Next time you spot a freshly rendered building or a housing estate mid-regeneration, there's a good chance a local specialist is part of the story. And they're worth knowing about.
